NFPA conference

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electricity and related hazards. Founded in 1896, NFPA develops and publishes over 300 consensus codes and standards designed to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other hazards. Here are some key aspects of NFPA:

  • Codes and standards: NFPA codes and standards are developed through a consensus process involving volunteers representing various stakeholders.

  • Publications and resources: NFPA produces several publications, guides and resources to educate and inform about fire safety, including the Fire Protection Handbook and the NFPA Journal.

  • Training and certification: NFPA offers training programs and certifications for professionals in fire safety and related fields. These programs ensure that individuals and organizations are well versed in the latest safety protocols and practices.

  • Research and data analysis: NFPA conducts research and data analysis to identify fire hazards, study fire behavior and develop strategies to reduce fire risk. This research serves as the basis for the development of its codes and standards.

  • Conference and education: NFPA organizes a major conference each year. The NFPA Conference and Exhibition brings together over 5,000 professionals for 120 educational sessions and a major exhibition featuring over 350 companies.

ELEN RISK CONSULTING is an active member of NFPA. We participate in two NFPA 30 technical committees, and have been selected as a speaker in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

In 2022, we co-presented with DEKRA's Michael Snyder an educational session on “Composite IBC Fire Risks: Reviewing past incidents and identifying new strategies”. Worldwide, the use of IBCs or IBCs for the storage and handling of flammable liquids results in significant fire risks. Several standards such as NFPA or FMDS limit the use of IBCs, but operators continue to use them outside the established limits, and major disasters continue to occur. In this presentation, we have tried to share feedback from multiple incidents involving these IBCs in several countries, from an analysis of their common root causes. The presentation can be downloaded below.

In 2024, we were selected to share our experience of automated storage.
